At UAG School of Medicine, excellence in medical education goes hand in hand with innovation. As we celebrate nearly 90 years of shaping future healthcare leaders, our International Program has embraced groundbreaking teaching methods that prepare our students for the challenges of modern medicine.
Organizations like AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges), AMA (American Medical Association) and NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) have taken the lead in laying the foundation for innovative medical education models.
Here are some changes that are implemented in our program.
A Holistic, Student-Centered Approach
Over the past three years, UAG has transformed its educational model to better meet the evolving needs of today’s learners. We’ve adopted a holistic approach that integrates student care with rigorous academic training, ensuring that every aspect of our curriculum fosters intellectual and personal growth.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) / Active Learning
We have integrated Problem-Based Learning into our curriculum as a core method for engaging students. In small, faculty-guided groups, students work through real clinical cases, transforming theoretical knowledge into practical understanding and honing critical thinking skills.
Simulation-Based Activities and Interprofessional Education
Our state-of-the-art simulation centers offer realistic, hands-on clinical training. Aligned with the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) framework, these sessions—and our interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives—equip students with the collaborative skills necessary for effective patient care in a team-based environment.
USMLE Student Preparedness Workshops
Recognizing the importance of success in board exams, our comprehensive USMLE workshops leverage spaced repetition and full-time counseling support. These sessions build exam readiness and promote overall wellness, ensuring that students can perform at their best under pressure.
Clinical Skills Bootcamp
Feedback from our students led to developing a Clinical Skills Bootcamp, which provides a refresher in critical areas such as history taking and physical examinations. This initiative ensures that as students transition to more advanced clinical rotations, they are fully prepared to meet the demands of real-world patient care.
Task Trainer Activities
Through hands-on Task Trainer modules, students gain essential manual skills—like suturing and intravenous insertion—using advanced mechanical and electronic interfaces. Our recent investment in portable ultrasound devices further enriches this experience, preparing students for the diagnostic challenges of modern medicine.
Medical Brigades and Community Engagement
From the first semester, our students participate in Medical Brigades, engaging with Spanish-speaking patients to enhance their clinical and communication skills. This early exposure to community health improves patient care and deepens students’ understanding of the social determinants of health.
Join the UAG Journey, our commitment to innovation and excellence drives everything we do. Combining cutting-edge teaching methods, robust USMLE preparation, and hands-on clinical experiences ensures our graduates are ready to excel in a global healthcare environment.
