So far, I've visited numerous locations. During my first month, I went to San Juan de Dios, the largest indoor market in all of Latin America. Here, you can find pretty much anything you're looking for, from fresh fruit and snacks to purses, clothing, glassware, and countless souvenirs. I've gone back a few times whenever I'm in the mood for a shopping spree. After my first block ended, I took a day trip to Ajijic near Lake Chapala for a mini spa day, and the natural scenery was stunning! I've also visited Tlaquepaque, which is close enough for a weekend or weekday evening outing — it has street food, souvenirs, and lights, especially around Día de los Muertos. Puerto Vallarta is the closest beach destination to Guadalajara, and of course I've gone for a beach day or two! One of my favorite places has been Mazamitla, one of Mexico's official "Pueblos Mágicos." There are great hiking and camping opportunities there. I stayed in a bubble tent, and watching the sky and stars at night was incredible. I did most of my local traveling and adventuring during my first year of medical school so I could prioritize studying for the USMLE Step exams during my second year. However, whenever I feel burnt out or need a break, I take a step back and travel around Guadalajara. There's so much to see and do here that I'm never short of activities.
Looking back at how hesitant I once was to move somewhere without speaking the language fluently, I'm amazed at how much Guadalajara has become home. I absolutely love living here, and I can't imagine anywhere else I'd rather be for medical school. I'm not ready to leave this wonderful city!
