Why did I choose UAG?

When I first started thinking about where I wanted to study medicine, I knew I wanted more than just a medical school. I wanted a place that would challenge me, support my growth, and help me become the kind of physician I aspire to be. I wanted to choose a place that was aligned with my values and, at the same time, would encourage me to grow beyond my comfort zone in a positive and meaningful way. For me, it was very important that the place that would prepare me to become a doctor would not only help me grow academically but would also continue developing me as a person.
UAG
I have always had the mentality that sometimes when our lives change in an unexpected way, it is not only because something better is coming, but because that change might be exactly what we need at that moment. Choosing UAG represented that for me. It meant taking a leap of faith, leaving what was familiar to me, and trusting that I was choosing a place where I could build the future I had always imagined for myself.

One of the first things that caught my attention about UAG was its values and mission, but most importantly, its commitment to
serving communities. For me, medicine is not only about understanding diseases, making diagnoses, or learning treatments. Medicine is also about caring for people. It is about being able to see the person behind the patient and understanding the responsibility that comes with becoming a physician.

Knowing that at UAG we would have
opportunities to interact with communities and patients academic journey from early in our medical education was something that really stood out to me. When I imagined myself becoming a medical student, that was exactly the type of experience I wanted to have.
I did not want to wait until the end of my education to understand what patient care meant. I wanted to begin developing those skills and connections from the very start of my journey. I wanted those experiences to be part of the process of becoming a physician I hope to be one day.

Academically, I also knew that UAG could give me the challenges and experiences I had been looking for. Before choosing the school, I saw the impact that UAG had on so many students and their lives, and I remember thinking, I want that for myself too. I wanted an experience that would challenge me, help me grow, and make me discover things about myself that I had not discovered yet.
Now that I am living that experience, I can say that I was not wrong. UAG has been life changing for me, both academically and personally. I have grown up in so many ways that sometimes it is difficult to put everything into words. Medical school has challenged me, but it has also shown me how capable I am of accomplishing when I keep going, even when things are difficult.

Another reason I chose UAG is because of the type of person and physician I want to become. I want to be an agent of change for others. I want my journey to be an example that when we continue fighting for what we want, even when the path is not always easy or exactly how we imagined it, we can accomplish great things. Sometimes what we achieve after taking that risk can be even greater than what we originally imagined.

Looking back, I like to think that UAG was a hidden treasure for me. It was a place that aligned with so many aspects of who I am: resilience, service, determination, growth, and the desire to keep moving forward. I chose UAG because I saw a strong
academic journey, meaningful experiences, values that connected with my own, and an environment that could help form me into the physician and person I have always wanted to become.
