Highlights from Orientation and the White Coat Ceremony
The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) School of Medicine proudly welcomed the Class of 2029—160 driven and passionate future physicians from the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico—into its renowned International Medical Program during a powerful and inspiring Orientation.
Arriving from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, these students have taken the first step on one of the most transformative journeys of their lives: the pursuit of a medical degree at one of Latin America’s most respected medical institutions.
A Warm UAG Welcome
Orientation began with a series of welcome messages from UAG leadership, setting the tone for an enriching and purpose-driven experience. Among the speakers were:
Antonio Leaño Reyes, President of UAG
Ricardo Beltrán Rojas, Vice President of International Operations
Dr. Kashif Ahmad, Dean of the International Program of Medicine
Dr. Anthony Martinez, UAG alumnus and honored guest
In his remarks, Dr. Ahmad emphasized the responsibility and privilege that come with becoming a physician.
“You are not just beginning an academic program—you are stepping into a tradition of service and excellence. At UAG, we are committed to supporting your transformation into ethical, capable, and compassionate physicians ready to make an impact anywhere in the world.”
Throughout the day, students participated in informative sessions led by key departments including Basic Sciences, Clinical Skills, Student Affairs, Career Advising, and Student Success. These sessions provided valuable insights into the academic expectations and resources available throughout their training.
An informal “Meet & Greet” coffee break allowed students to connect with faculty, future mentors, and peers—helping foster an early sense of community and connection.
“In Our Graduate’s Own Words”: A Message from Dr. Anthony Martinez
One of the most inspiring moments came from Dr. Anthony Martinez, a proud UAG graduate and distinguished physician-educator. In a powerful keynote, he reflected on his journey from UAG to leadership roles at some of the most respected institutions in the U.S., encouraging students to embrace their calling with purpose and humility.
“You are part of the noblest profession—a calling rooted in service to others,” he said. “Your greatest power will not just be to heal—but to care deeply for those in pain.”
White Coat Ceremony: A Symbol of Purpose and Commitment
The most meaningful moment of Orientation was the White Coat Ceremony—a revered tradition that marks a student's official entry into the medical profession.
Surrounded by faculty, peers, and loved ones, students donned their white coats for the first time, signifying their commitment to uphold the values of integrity, compassion, and lifelong service. The ceremony was both emotional and empowering, as each student stepped forward to embrace their role in the future of healthcare.
“The path will be demanding,” said Dr. Martinez. “But every challenge you overcome will shape who you become. And when you place your hands on a patient for the first time, everything you’ve worked for will make sense.”
Building Community and Confidence
As Orientation continued, students received a well-rounded introduction to the university’s academic tools, student support systems, and the cultural and professional expectations that come with medical training. The program was carefully designed to ensure students feel equipped, informed, and inspired as they begin their studies.
To conclude the experience, students participated in a celebratory Dean’s Brunch, where they had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations with faculty, staff, and classmates in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. It was a moment to reflect, connect, and celebrate the journey ahead.
The Class of 2029: Ready to Make Their Mark
With this new cohort, UAG continues to reaffirm its legacy as a premier institution for international medical education. These students join a global network of over 140,000 UAG-trained physicians, many of whom are leaders in healthcare across the U.S., Latin America, and beyond.
As the Class of 2029 begins their journey, they do so supported by a university deeply committed to their personal and professional growth. Their path will be filled with challenges—but also with moments of discovery, impact, and transformation.
