The journey of a physician continues well beyond graduation. For UAG School of Medicine alumnus Jorge Urbina, Class of 2024, that journey has included new research opportunities, professional connections, and experiences that are helping shape his future in academic surgery.
Following his graduation from UAG, Jorge completed his clinical rotations at University Medical Center in Las Vegas before dedicating time to preparing for and passing the USMLE Step 1. As his interest in general surgery grew, he recognized the importance of research experience and mentorship in pursuing his goals.
In early 2025, Jorge attended two American College of Surgeons (ACS) meetings, where he connected with surgeons and began building professional relationships. These experiences eventually led him to a research fellowship in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
Expanding His Experience Through Research
At Mayo Clinic, Jorge has contributed to research projects examining surgical outcomes in pancreatic cancer, intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, and colorectal liver metastases. He has also participated in bariatric surgery research using large national databases, including the MBSAQIP database.
Through this work, he has had the opportunity to present research at national and international surgical conferences, including the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO) Congress in Toronto, and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) Congress in Singapore.
His experiences represent another chapter in the journeys of UAG School of Medicine graduates as they continue developing their careers and pursuing opportunities throughout the medical field.
UAG School of Medicine is proud to recognize alumnus Jorge Urbina and celebrate the dedication and continued growth of its graduates.
