Juan Carlos Leaño del Castillo officially assumed the position of President of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) on Monday, succeeding Antonio Leaño Reyes, who will now serve as President Emeritus of the institution.
The announcement was made during a University Council meeting held at the “Dr. Luis Garibay Gutiérrez” Auditorium in the university's administrative headquarters.
During the ceremony, Antonio Leaño Reyes, President Emeritus of UAG, delivered a message reaffirming the university's commitment to continuing an educational mission built on more than nine decades of history, focused on academic excellence, comprehensive education, and service to Mexico.
He emphasized that this leadership transition represents a process of continuity and renewal as the university approaches its centennial in 2035.
Under the leadership of Juan Carlos Leaño del Castillo, UAG will continue working to enhance academic quality, foster innovation, strengthen national and international partnerships, and respond to the technological and educational challenges facing new generations.
Juan Carlos Leaño then addressed the audience, expressing his gratitude for the trust placed in him and recognizing the leadership of Antonio Leaño Reyes. He emphasized that his predecessor's experience, guidance, and legacy will be essential during this new institutional chapter.
“That is why my first action as President is to appoint Antonio Leaño Reyes as President Emeritus of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara and Advisor to the Office of the President. I accept the challenge you have entrusted to us,” he stated during his speech.
“Achieving our 2027 goals is only one part of this commitment. It is about bringing our centennial vision to life and beginning today to prepare for the next 100 years of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. I accept this responsibility with humility and determination, fully aware that I will need the talent and commitment of each and every one of you.”
In his remarks, UAG's new President emphasized that education must deliver tangible results in students' lives through inspiring faculty, meaningful academic experiences, and opportunities to conduct research, pursue entrepreneurship, and solve real-world problems.
He also highlighted the challenges and opportunities presented by technology and Artificial Intelligence, stressing that these tools must be used responsibly, ethically, and with a human-centered approach.
“Our students and their families need to see how their experience at the university transforms their abilities, expands their opportunities, and empowers them to build a purposeful life,” Leaño del Castillo stated.
“We must respond through concrete actions: with inspiring faculty members who receive the support they need to innovate, with meaningful experiences that connect knowledge to everyday life, and with opportunities to conduct research, pursue entrepreneurship, solve real-world problems, and learn to work collaboratively.”
The new administration will focus on strengthening internal collaboration, improving decision-making processes, and ensuring accountability in fulfilling institutional commitments, with the goal of enhancing UAG's academic quality and social impact.
Leaño del Castillo called on students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in shaping this new chapter, guided by the principles of academic freedom, university autonomy, and the institution's core values of God, Country, and Family.
“We have fulfilled our mission. We are handing over a stronger university and a future filled with greater opportunities.”
This is the goal the institution aims to achieve as it approaches its centennial.
