World-Renowned Physiology Expert Dr. Linda Costanzo Empowers UAG Students to Think Early Like a Physician

By: UAG School of Medicine

It’s not every day that one of the world’s top physiologists speaks directly to future doctors. But that’s exactly what happened at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) School of Medicine.

Dr. Linda Costanzo—Professor Emerita at VCU School of Medicine and celebrated worldwide as the “Physiology Goddess”—shared her most valuable learning strategies in a message crafted especially for UAG medical students.

A Moment of Global Inspiration

“Mastering physiology is the big kickoff to all of your pathophysiology learning,” Dr. Costanzo explains in her five-minute talk. Her message aligns with UAG’s educational philosophy: start with deep conceptual understanding to become a strong clinical thinker and confident test-taker.

For any student on the road to the USMLE Step 1 and a future in medicine, her advice is not just helpful, it’s transformational.

Dr. Costanzo’s 5 Power Tips for Medical Mastery

  1. Understand Concepts, Not Just Facts
“If you understand how the normal works, you can figure out what happens when it’s broken.” That’s the essence of UAG’s case-based, integrated learning.

  1. Make Equations Tell a Story
“Turn every graph into an intuitive story—only then memorize the formula.” UAG’s small-group workshops bring this idea to life through real-world applications.

  1. Write to Remember
Passive copying doesn’t work. Dr. Costanzo urges students to use charts, concept maps, and sequences (like RAAS) to forge deeper neural pathways.

  1. Cover the Choices, Think First
“Always cover up the answer choices and think through the question on your own.” UAG’s formative quizzes and reasoning drills echo this principle.

  1. Balance Thinking—Don’t Overthink
“Think just enough—but don’t overthink,” she says. UAG’s simulation-based training helps students stay sharp and efficient under pressure.

More Than Study Tips—A Mindset for Medical Success

These aren’t just academic strategies. They’re tools to help you think like a physician, from your first lecture to your last clinical rotation. At UAG, Dr. Costanzo’s mindset is embedded into the way we teach, challenge, and support our students.
