The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) welcomed international students who are beginning their studies at the international school of Medicine.

The welcome took place in two stages: first during Orientation Day, and later at the White Coat Ceremony.

Orientation day was a formal event, led by UAG President Lic. Antonio Leaño Reyes, signifying the starting point of a formative journey that combines scientific knowledge, professional ethics, and social responsibility.

In his welcome message, UAG Vice President
Lic. Antonio Leaño del Castillo explained that choosing to study Medicine in another country is a transcendental decision that requires discipline, determination, and a strong vocation for service.

“With a legacy spanning several generations in the training of health professionals, UAG has established itself as an institution that promotes collaborative work, the exchange of ideas, and innovation, preparing students to face the challenges of a global medical environment,”

he stated, adding:

“Today is not just an orientation day; it is the moment when all your efforts begin to take shape. From now on, you are not only students, but future physicians joining an academic community committed to knowledge, ethics, and service to society.”

After the ceremony, international students began their orientation activities at UAG’s International Campus, where they were introduced to the Dean of the international school of medicine, Dr. Kashif Ahmad, faculty members, and the full range of services available to them throughout their education at the institution.

Wearing Their First White Coat

In the afternoon, the White Coat Ceremony was held at Ciudad Universitaria in the “Lic. Antonio Leaño Reyes” Auditorium, where each student donned their clinical white coat for the first time, symbolizing their formal entry into the medical profession.

The guest speaker was Dr. Paul T. Wielebinski, a UAGSOM alumni, who assured students that they are about to begin a great journey.

“It will not be easy, but it will be deeply transformative. Along this path, your family and loved ones will support you and sustain you during the most demanding moments; value them and always appreciate that support,” he said.

“You will grow alongside science and medicine, always with the goal of benefiting those who entrust you with their health and their lives. Humility, passion, and empathy must guide you at every stage of your training and professional practice; use them as your greatest tools and always wear your white coat with pride and commitment.”

The Dean, Dr. Kashif Ahmad, also shared a message, assuring students that throughout their training they will develop resilience, emotional stability, and a broader cultural perspective.

“You will acquire new skills and experience situations that will strengthen your character and vocation, while progressively enhancing your clinical competencies and your preparation to treat patients with responsibility and humanity,” he added.

In addition to receiving their first white coat, students also took the traditional Hippocratic Oath, pledging to practice medicine ethically.

The ceremony concluded with a group photo at UAG’s iconic Central Library, capturing the pride and excitement of the new generation.
