Since I was young, I felt a strong curiosity for science and for understanding how the human body works. Along with a genuine desire to serve others and the support of great mentors, medicine became more than a vocation for me — it became a real passion.

That passion naturally led me to UAG School of Medicine. I was born and raised in Guadalajara, and UAG has always been known for excellent medical training. My parents are UAG alumni, and from a young age they encouraged me to continue my preparation with the same values and academic rigor. After my sabbatical year, I visited the campus and felt it was the right fit. I really liked the curriculum, the learning environment, and the infrastructure the university offers.

Throughout my training, UAG gave me a very strong foundation that has helped me perform well in the different roles I’ve held over the last few years. Early clinical exposure also strengthened my sense of empathy, which I consider a cornerstone in a doctor’s toolbox and essential to providing the best care possible.

That foundation also shaped my interest in global health and neuroscience. Mission:BRAIN Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on addressing the neurosurgical gap between high-income and low- and middle-income countries through capacity building, collaboration, and world-class neuroscience education. Today, the foundation has a presence in 28 countries through more than 100 chapters worldwide.

UAG was the second Mission:BRAIN chapter globally, and I founded the chapter shortly after graduating. Since then, the UAG chapter has continued to engage students through meetings, workshops, mentorship, and access to an international academic network.

My involvement with Mission:BRAIN began during my social service at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City, where I discovered my passion for neurosurgery. Over time, my role within the organization grew. I served as the founding president of the UAG chapter, later became the foundation’s first Regional Director for Latin America, and I currently serve as Global Outreach Director, overseeing 112 chapters across 28 countries and five continents.

One of the most fulfilling parts of this work has been mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and helping them realize they can pursue ambitious goals. I am especially proud of initiatives such as supporting the training of Sierra Leone’s first neurosurgeon and Neurocamp, a student-led program that introduces neuroscience to young students in low-resource communities. The Mission:BRAIN UAG chapter is actively involved in this initiative locally in Guadalajara.

For students considering UAG School of Medicine, my advice is simple: don’t overstress and enjoy the ride. UAG became a home for many of us. Take advantage of every opportunity, study hard, and remember to enjoy the process. Those were some of the best years of my life.

I graduated from UAG in early 2022 and am currently completing a postdoctoral research fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, focusing on brain cancer biology. Together, my research and my work with Mission:BRAIN continue to guide my goal of becoming a neurosurgeon with a strong focus on global neurosurgery.
