On April 29, Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) hosted an engaging and highly successful Interprofessional Scenario Session for Block 2 medical students, focused on collaboration with the nursing field—one of the most essential partnerships in healthcare.

As part of this curricular session, integrated into the students’ regular class schedule, participants explored the topic of
nursing practice through a hands-on learning experience centered on IV Peripheral Cannulation. The session was led by distinguished nursing professionals, including Lic. Iván Hernández, Lic. Ana Navarro, and Lic. Brittany Robles, and the CSD team who guided students through both the theoretical foundations and practical application of the procedure.

The experience emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in clinical settings, reinforcing the idea that effective patient care depends on teamwork across healthcare specialties.

“These interprofessional scenarios are designed so that students understand early in their training that they will always be working in close contact with other disciplines within the healthcare sector,” said Dr. Daniel Alejandro Rivera, Co-Director of Clinical Skills Development at UAG. “In this case, nursing is perhaps the discipline they will interact with most throughout their professional lives.”

A key highlight of the session was a
live, hands-on demonstration, where students, under informed consent, participated directly in the procedure. This allowed their peers to observe and practice IV cannulation techniques in a controlled, supervised environment

“It is important for students to recognize that responsibilities in healthcare are often shared,” Dr. Rivera added. “They must take an active interest in skills beyond their immediate scope, as they may one day need to address these situations themselves. Having both the theoretical knowledge and the practical experience is essential.”

Students responded enthusiastically to the session, noting the value of learning directly from nursing professionals and gaining early exposure to real-world clinical procedures.

“One of the most important aspects of this session was the combination of theory and practice,” Dr. Rivera said. “Seeing how these procedures are performed in real time helps students better understand how this type of clinical dynamic is carried out.”

This successful session reflects UAG’s ongoing commitment to
early clinical exposure, interprofessional education, and the development of confident, well-rounded future physicians.
