Sleep Medicine, Obesity Medicine & Internal Medicine For Dr. Rafael J. Sepulveda Acosta, medicine has always been about more than treating symptoms — it is about understanding the full picture of a patient’s health and helping them achieve lasting well-being.

A proud graduate of Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara’s Class of 2007, Dr. Sepulveda is now the CEO and Medical Director of Sleep Fit Medical – Sleep & Weight Management Center in Sonoma, California. Through his work, he has developed an integrated approach to patient care that combines Sleep Medicine, Obesity Medicine, and Internal Medicine, focusing on the important connection between sleep health and metabolic wellness.

After completing his medical training at UAG, Dr. Sepulveda continued his postgraduate education in the United States. He completed his Internal Medicine residency in Puerto Rico before pursuing a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where he gained advanced expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Today, he is triple board-certified in Internal Medicine, Sleep Medicine, and Obesity Medicine.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sepulveda has focused on helping patients improve their quality of life through comprehensive and personalized care. His practice emphasizes the importance of addressing sleep disorders while also supporting patients in managing weight and metabolic health. By integrating these fields, he works to provide solutions that not only treat conditions but also promote long-term health and prevention.

Patient education and advocacy are central to his philosophy. Dr. Sepulveda believes that empowering patients with knowledge about their health allows them to take an active role in their treatment and long-term wellness.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Sepulveda is actively involved in the advancement of medical education. He collaborates with leading professional organizations such as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Obesity Medicine Association, contributing to the exchange of knowledge within the medical community. Through speaking engagements, webinars, and professional forums, he continues to share insights with fellow physicians and healthcare professionals.

Looking back on his journey, Dr. Sepulveda credits his experience at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara as a defining chapter in his professional and personal development. Studying in a multicultural academic environment exposed him to diverse perspectives and helped cultivate the cultural awareness, empathy, and respect that remain central to his practice today.

His advice to current students is simple but meaningful: embrace the diversity of the people around you and value the relationships you build during medical school. The connections formed during this stage of training, he believes, often become some of the most impactful and lasting parts of a medical career.

Through his work and leadership, Dr. Sepulveda continues to reflect the global impact of UAG alumni — physicians who are not only advancing medicine, but also improving the lives of the communities they serve.
