In a moving and inspirational commencement ceremony, 222 graduates from Puerto Rico and the United States celebrated the culmination of their medical education in the International Medical Program at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG). The event, held in the University Gymnasium on Friday, June 6, 2025, was marked by pride, emotion, and a renewed sense of purpose as the Class of 2025 officially joined the global community of medical professionals.

A Ceremony to Remember

Family, friends, faculty, and honored guests gathered to witness a momentous day that not only marked the end of years of study and sacrifice but also the beginning of new journeys in medicine. The celebration was punctuated by powerful speeches, personal reflections, and the timeless recitation of the Hippocratic Oath.

Wisdom and Encouragement from a Distinguished Guest

Delivering the keynote address was Dr. Elia Lima-Walton, MD, PA, a respected medical professional whose words resonated deeply with the graduates. In her compelling message, she praised the class for their resilience and encouraged them to embrace their careers with humility, compassion, and an unyielding commitment to lifelong learning.

“As you embark on your medical careers, let humility be your guiding light,” Dr. Lima-Walton shared. “Approach every patient with the compassion to understand, the humility to listen, and the dedication to provide the best care possible.”

She emphasized the unique advantage that the UAG Class of 2025 holds: a global perspective, cultural fluency, and bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish. These strengths, she said, position the graduates to better serve diverse communities—particularly the over 40 million Spanish speakers in the United States—and to lead the way in addressing health disparities with empathy and innovation.

“You are now part of a noble profession that holds the power to change lives and communities,” she said. “Push yourselves beyond the ordinary, advocate for the underserved, and make healthcare accessible to all.”

A Voice for the Class of 2025

Alan Mauricio De Leon, the valedictorian, delivered a heartfelt and empowering speech that brought the audience to its feet. With a vibrant blend of English and Spanish, faith and humor, Alan honored God, his family, and the community that supported him and his classmates through every step of the journey.

“You’ve survived 100% of your hardest days,” Alan said. “You’ve earned those letters—M.D.—and this is only the beginning.”

His message centered on authenticity, mental resilience, and the importance of remembering that while medicine is their profession, it should never replace who they are as human beings.

“Your identity. Your presence. YOU. That’s what impacts lives,” he said passionately. “Be the doctor someone desperately needs. Be the change.”

Alan reminded his fellow graduates of the weight and beauty of their new titles and the responsibility they carry as future healers, leaders, and role models—especially within underrepresented communities.

Honoring a Life-Changing Journey

Dr. Kashif Ahmad, Dean of the International School of Medicine Program, expressed his sincere congratulations to the graduates and gratitude to their families. He encouraged them to always consider UAG their home and to remain engaged as alumni and ambassadors of the institution’s legacy.

“You have worked hard, and today, you stand ready to serve the world. We are proud of who you are, and we can’t wait to see the impact you will have.”

Following the formal awarding of diplomas, the Hippocratic Oath was administered—an enduring symbol of ethical commitment and the heart of the medical profession.

A Class with a Global Mission

The UAG Class of 2025 leaves with more than a medical degree. These graduates depart Guadalajara equipped with global clinical training, cultural competency, and a dedication to health equity. Their time at UAG has given them not only the academic foundation but the personal and professional maturity to rise to the challenges of a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

This generation of UAG-trained doctors is bilingual, globally aware, and deeply committed to making a difference. With the power to heal, to advocate, and to inspire, they now take their place on the frontlines of medicine.

Congratulations, Class of 2025. The world is waiting for your healing hands and hopeful hearts.
