The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) commemorated the 91st anniversary of its founding with the traditional Solemn Commemoration Ceremony.
The event took place at the University Gymnasium and was led by Rector Lic. Antonio Leaño Reyes, with Ing. Salvador Zamora Zamora, a UAG alumni and Secretary General of the Government of Jalisco, as the guest speaker.
Over 2,000 people attended, including officials, students, alumni, professors, staff, and special guests, joining in this time-honored ceremony.
During his message, Rector Leaño Reyes highlighted that even after 91 years, UAG remains an innovative institution, continuously strengthening its academic programs while fostering research and international collaboration to expand opportunities for students.
"But above all, and this is what truly sets us apart, we continue to form well-rounded and principled individuals: professionals with strong technical expertise who are firmly grounded in values; citizens who understand that justice, truth, the defense of life, and love for others are not merely additions to the curriculum, but its very purpose. We will always strive for a better Mexico, free from constraints that could compromise its future," he stated.
Lic. Leaño Reyes noted that UAG was founded on March 3, 1935, following a struggle led by a group of courageous young leaders, including Carlos Cuesta Gallardo, brothers Ángel and Antonio Leaño Álvarez del Castillo, and Dionisio Fernández Sahagún, who fought for Libertada de Catedra and Autonomia Universitaria, ideals that gave life to the university.
The Rector also encouraged students, professors, staff, and alumni to work from their respective roles to keep the ideals of this institution alive.

“May this Solemn Commemoration Ceremony renew our commitment to truth, our fidelity to our principles, and our hope in Mexico. For as long as there is a university community willing to defend freedom, to educate with values, and to serve with generosity, the flame that was lit in 1935 will never be extinguished,” he affirmed.
“With gratitude to God and the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe for these 91 years, with pride in our history, confidence in our future, and a steadfast commitment to remain a free university defined by academic excellence and strong moral values, I invite you to proclaim with heartfelt conviction, Long live Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, today and always.”
In his remarks, Ing. Salvador Zamora Zamora emphasized that beyond preparing professionals, UAG shapes individuals of character, guided by responsibility, ethics, respect, commitment to others, and love for family. “It teaches us that freedom implies responsibility and that knowledge must always be placed at the service of the common good,” said the Secretary General of the Government of Jalisco.
The guest speaker stated that UAG alumni, like himself, must continue working every day with ethics and commitment to set an example in their communities. He also thanked the professors for educating generations with strong values.
He encouraged the students to take pride in their university and to prepare themselves to be the present and future of Jalisco and Mexico.
“Do not let anyone steal your dreams and aspirations. The right path is the one you have chosen: prepare yourselves, work with honesty, and always do good,” he said.
“Because when education is guided by values, when youth are driven by ideals, and when society unites for the common good, no adversity can stop us.”
Carlos Jesús Esparza, President of the FEJ.
“That is why UAG has endured over the years and through all adversities. I encourage you, fellow students, not to abandon this path of courage, service to others, and defense of our nation.”

Juan Carlos Leaño del Castillo, Administrative Vice-Rector; Dr. Ricardo Beltrán Rojas, Secretary General; and Mr. Humberto Gutiérrez Zamorano, Secretary General of the Academic and Administrative Workers Union of the University.
