Dr. Rafael J. Sepulveda-Acosta
The California Sleep Society (CSS), a leading voice for sleep professionals in California, recently hosted its annual symposium bringing together physicians, dentists, technologists, researchers, and clinic leaders from across the western region. The event featured a series of lectures addressing the latest developments in sleep medicine, polysomnography, and patient care, offering attendees valuable continuing education and professional insights.

Among the distinguished speakers was Rafael J. Sepulveda-Acosta, MD, a proud graduate of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. On October 4, 2025, Dr. Sepulveda-Acosta presented “Navigating the Obesity-OSA Paradigm: When a Pound of Clinician Awareness Could Bring Us Closer to OSA Remission.”

In his session, Dr. Sepulveda-Acosta explored the complex relationship between obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), underscoring the importance of clinician awareness and early intervention. He discussed the clinical challenges and opportunities for improved outcomes through integrated patient management, weight-related strategies, and evidence-based treatment approaches.

With OSA prevalence continuing to rise alongside obesity rates, his message was clear: healthcare professionals must recognize underlying risk factors and adopt a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. His lecture provided attendees with practical strategies while reinforcing the critical role of collaboration among sleep physicians, technologists, and allied health professionals in improving patient outcomes.
As a UAG alumnus, Dr. Sepulveda-Acosta embodies the University’s mission to prepare physicians with a global perspective and a commitment to advancing healthcare. His participation at the CSS Symposium reflects not only his dedication to sleep medicine but also the continued impact of UAG-trained physicians in addressing today’s most pressing health challenges.

At UAG, we are proud of our alumni like Dr. Sepulveda-Acosta, who carry forward the University’s legacy of excellence, leadership, and service to patients worldwide.
