In a grand celebration of its storied legacy, the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) marked the 90th anniversary of its founding with a spectacular event held at Estadio Tres de Marzo. More than 8,500 students, alumni, faculty, and distinguished guests gathered to honor UAG’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social responsibility.
A Legacy Rooted in Excellence and Innovation
At the ceremony, President Antonio Leaño Reyes reaffirmed UAG’s mission to drive transformative change in education. “We are pioneers of private education in Mexico. Our legacy is not only defined by time but by the cultural and academic heritage we have fostered over the decades,” he stated. Emphasizing that the future is built on today’s actions, he declared, “Our focus is on advancing our vision for the future, creating a lasting impact through innovation, research, and community engagement.”
Honoring Our Founders and Visionaries
UAG’s history is marked by the tireless struggle for academic freedom and autonomy, led by visionary figures such as Carlos Cuesta Gallardo and the Leaño Álvarez del Castillo brothers. Each year, during the traditional “Velada Luctuosa” on March 3rd, the university pays homage to its founders, university martyrs, and distinguished contributors who have shaped UAG into the institution it is today.
This year’s celebration included stirring performances by the UAG band, the Chamber Orchestra, and the UAG Choir, culminating in a breathtaking multimedia show with laser and drone displays that illuminated inspirational messages in the Guadalajara night sky.
Future Vision
President Leaño Reyes reaffirmed UAG’s long-term commitment to innovation, stating, “Our goal is to be recognized as the university of innovation in Mexico by 2035.”
Delivering a compelling address, guest speaker Dr. José Medina Mora, former president of Employers Confederation of the Mexican Republic (COPARMEX), emphasized the transformative power of education, research, and entrepreneurship.
He encouraged students and faculty to cultivate a mindset of passion, perseverance, and forward-thinking, highlighting these qualities as essential drivers of both personal growth and societal advancement.
A Call to Global Impact
UAG’s 90-year milestone is a testament to its profound influence in shaping healthcare professionals who make a difference worldwide. With more than 140,000 graduates, including 19,000 from the United States, UAG continues to be a beacon of educational excellence in Mexico, the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada. The event underscored the university’s commitment to building a community of innovative leaders dedicated to transforming the world through education.
