UAG Medical Students Participate in Hands-On Neuro Exam Workshop for Infants

At UAG School of Medicine, hands-on learning is at the core of medical education. This week, members of the Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) took part in an engaging and immersive Neuro Exam Workshop for Infants, led by the distinguished Dr. Álvarez at the Center for Simulated Patient Care on our International Campus.

The workshop provided students with a unique opportunity to observe and practice assessing neurological reflexes in infants, an essential skill for future physicians, particularly those pursuing careers in neurology, pediatrics, and family medicine. This session emphasized the importance of early neurological assessment and how age-appropriate reflex testing plays a critical role in diagnosing and monitoring neurodevelopmental milestones in young children.

Learning from Our Youngest Professors

The hands-on experience was made even more memorable thanks to the invaluable participation of three special guests—our youngest "professors", aged 4, 7, and 9 months. These little ones helped demonstrate key reflexes such as the Moro reflex, grasp reflex, and Babinski reflex, allowing students to directly witness the expected responses at different stages of infancy.

Dr. Álvarez guided students through the step-by-step process of performing a thorough neurological exam, emphasizing proper technique, clinical significance, and interpretation of findings. The interactive nature of the session enabled students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life scenarios, enhancing their confidence and competency in pediatric neurological assessments.

Bridging Theory with Practice

By bringing together students in a collaborative and hands-on environment, this workshop reinforced the importance of practical application in medical education. At UAG School of Medicine, we are committed to providing our students with immersive learning experiences that go beyond textbooks, preparing them for the realities of patient care.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Álvarez for his expert guidance and to our youngest teachers for their patience and cooperation. This workshop was not only a learning experience but also a reminder of the profound impact that early medical training has on shaping competent, compassionate physicians.
