In a remarkable display of academic excellence and innovation in surgical research, UAG School of Medicine student Sofia Quintero Argentín participated in the 20th Annual Academic Surgical Congress held in Las Vegas, Nevada from February 11–13, 2025. This prestigious event, organized by the Academic Surgical Congress, brings together medical students, residents, and physicians from all over the states to share innovative research, exchange insights, and shape the future of surgical care.

A Platform for Aspiring Surgeons

During the congress, Sofia attended a series of lectures covering diverse surgical topics presented by distinguished guest speakers, gaining exposure to the latest advancements and best practices in the field. The event provided an excellent forum for learning, where Sofia had the unique opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions with peers and experts alike.

Presenting Significant Research

A highlight of Sofia’s participation was her presentation of the abstract titled “Ground Level Falls in the Elderly on Pre-Injury Anticoagulation With GCS 15: Are PanScans Warranted?” This presentation took place during the Session 92 Clinical/Outcomes: Trauma/Critical Care Quickshot Session VII, held on February 13 at Sage Hall 2. The abstract examined the complexities of managing trauma in elderly patients on pre-injury anticoagulation and evaluated the role of pan-scans in this vulnerable population. Sofia’s work was met with insightful feedback from a distinguished panel of medical professionals, which not only validated her research but also provided valuable suggestions for further exploration.
