BASIC SCIENCES

During the first two years of the MD program at UAG School of Medicine, students focus on building a strong foundation in Basic Sciences. This phase is essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of human biology, anatomy, and disease processes through an innovative, systems-based approach. Our curriculum integrates early hands-on experience and emphasizes critical thinking, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical scenarios from the start.

Throughout these two years, students also benefit from USMLE preparation, ensuring they are fully prepared for the Step 1 exam. By combining rigorous academic learning with real-world applications, UAG provides the tools and resources necessary for students to excel as future physicians and seamlessly transition into clinical rotations.

SYSTEMS-BASED APPROACH

A system-based approach curriculum that integrates core medical sciences with real-world clinical applications, preparing you for a successful medical career.

Our integrated system-based curriculum organizes medical education around body systems like the cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems, rather than individual subjects. This approach combines anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology into a cohesive learning experience for each system.

Key features include:

  • Holistic Learning: Students understand how body systems interact in clinical contexts, promoting practical, integrated knowledge.
  • Sequential Curriculum: Knowledge builds progressively, reinforcing previous learning throughout the program.
  • Interdisciplinary Teaching: Faculty from multiple disciplines collaborate to deliver comprehensive education.
  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL): Students engage with real or simulated cases, linking theory to clinical practice from day one.
  • Clinical Application: A strong focus on applying foundational knowledge to real-world medical practice, preparing students for their future careers.

Benefits of Integrated Medical Education

  • Better Understanding and Retention: By integrating knowledge and applying it in clinical contexts, students tend to understand and retain information better.
  • Clinical Preparation: Students are better prepared for clinical practice by understanding how different aspects of medicine interrelate in patient care.
  • Early Development of Clinical Skills: Early exposure to clinical scenarios and the use of PBL help develop clinical skills from the early years of study.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

At UAG School of Medicine, students gain invaluable hands-on experience through unique clinical opportunities and medical brigades. From the early stages of the MD program, students are immersed in real-world medical environments, where they can apply classroom knowledge to patient care under the supervision of experienced physicians.

Our medical brigades allow students to work directly with underserved communities, providing essential healthcare services while enhancing their clinical skills. These opportunities not only strengthen students' abilities in patient diagnosis, treatment, and care management, but also foster a deep understanding of global health challenges.

By participating in these immersive clinical experiences, UAG students develop the practical skills needed to excel in clinical rotations, residency programs, and beyond, ensuring they are well-prepared for their medical careers.

CURRICULUM

BASIC SCIENCE’S ACADEMIC STRUCTURE

Organized Course Blocks: All courses are systematically organized into manageable blocks, making it easier for students to study and grasp complex medical concepts. This structured approach helps in the sequential understanding of the material.

NBME-Style Exams: To better prepare students for the USMLE exams, all course assessments are designed with NBME-style questions. This familiarizes students with the format and rigor of the licensing exams, enhancing their test-taking skills and readiness.

Pre-Exam Review Sessions: In preparation for high-stakes exams, we offer comprehensive review sessions. These sessions provide an opportunity to revisit key topics, clarify doubts, and reinforce learning, ensuring students are well-prepared.

Timely Faculty Support: Our dedicated faculty members are committed to providing timely advice and guidance. Students can expect responses to their queries within 24 hours, ensuring continuous support throughout the course.

Small Group Learning: We emphasize the importance of small group learning to facilitate enhanced understanding and retention of course content. This approach promotes active participation, personalized attention, and collaborative learning among students.

Gamification: To make learning more engaging and enjoyable, we incorporate gamification techniques in our courses. By integrating game-like elements, we aim to motivate students, encourage active learning, and make the educational process fun and interactive.
