The School of Medicine supports students and faculty in identifying research interests, developing research skills, and connecting with appropriate investigators, mentors, projects, and institutional research opportunities. This approach promotes meaningful engagement with research while recognizing that research development is strengthened through collaboration across the University.

INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH ROLES
The Research Advisory Council is an advisory body that contributes to the discussion of institutional research priorities, strategic development, and initiatives that support the growth and quality of research across the University.
The Health Sciences Research Committee supports and coordinates research-related initiatives within the Health Sciences, including the promotion of research activity, collaboration, and alignment with broader institutional research priorities.
These institutional roles provide important channels for communication and coordination between the School of Medicine and UAG's broader research structure. Through these positions, Dr. Alvarez maintains direct and transparent communication with the University's research and technological development leadership and with the coordination responsible for Health Sciences research.
This connection supports the identification and communication of research initiatives, opportunities, and appropriate institutional pathways for students and faculty.

The purpose of research development at UAG School of Medicine is to strengthen students' and faculty members' engagement with scientific inquiry while connecting the School of Medicine with the broader research ecosystem of UAG.
Research activities focus on developing research skills, encouraging scholarly inquiry, supporting student projects, facilitating access to appropriate mentors and investigators, and creating opportunities for academic and scientific collaboration.
Rather than functioning as an isolated research structure, research activities within the School of Medicine are developed through collaboration with faculty researchers, UAG's central research structure, and academic partners within and beyond the University.
Research Initiatives:
Research mentoring program (RMP)
The Research Mentoring Program (RMP) represents an ongoing student research mentoring and guidance initiative within the School of Medicine.
The initiative provides students with orientation, mentoring, and guidance to help them identify appropriate research pathways and connect with investigators, projects, mentors, and institutional opportunities according to their academic interests.
RMP is not intended to function as an independent research laboratory or research center. Instead, it serves as a mechanism for helping students navigate the research process and access appropriate research opportunities through existing institutional and academic channels.
Since its inception, more than one hundred student research projects and scientific drafts have been developed through research guidance and mentoring, reflecting the continued growth of student engagement with research at the School of Medicine.
The initiative also facilitates connections with researchers and academic partners, allowing students to explore research opportunities according to their interests, academic preparation, and the availability of appropriate mentors and projects.
Research Day provides a platform for students and faculty to present research projects and engage with researchers and academic collaborators.
The initiative promotes scientific communication, scholarly discussion, feedback from researchers, and early exposure to the broader research community. It also provides students with an opportunity to develop their ability to communicate scientific findings and participate in academic discussions.
Through these activities, the School of Medicine continues to expand opportunities for students to present their work and develop the skills required for academic and scientific engagement.

Through these connections, students and faculty may gain access to research opportunities, academic collaborations, scientific mentorship, and opportunities to present or further develop their work at national and international levels.
Students in the International Program who are interested in research may consult the University's researcher directory to identify investigators whose areas of expertise align with their academic interests.
The directory is maintained by UAG's central research structure and is updated periodically to reflect the University's research community and areas of expertise.
Students may use this resource as an initial point of reference when exploring potential research areas and identifying investigators with whom they may wish to connect through the appropriate institutional channels.

Students who demonstrate a sustained interest in research and whose academic interests align with a faculty member's area of expertise may be considered for potential research opportunities, subject to the availability of appropriate projects, mentorship capacity, and the faculty member's research priorities. This process is intended to encourage meaningful and mutually appropriate research connections rather than automatic placement, while helping students progressively develop the preparation and commitment expected for research engagement.
