The Demand for Various Types of Doctors
There will always be a need for doctors. However, as certain health conditions have become more widespread, the demand for specific types of physicians has begun to rise as well. In addition, a growing economy means that people are increasingly able to afford medical care, which also contributes to the demand for doctors. Let's take a look at the 10 types of physicians in high demand right now, and how an education at UAG School of Medicine can help you fulfill this demand.

1. Family Doctors
Family doctors are physicians who provide primary care to patients of all ages. They are often the first point of contact for patients when they have a health concern, and they play a vital role in diagnosing and treating health conditions.

Family doctors are in high demand for a variety of reasons. First, as the population continues to grow, there is a greater need for primary care physicians. Additionally, the aging baby boomer generation is beginning to need more medical care as they enter their retirement years. Finally, an increased focus on preventive care means that people are more likely to visit the doctor for check-ups and screenings, rather than waiting until they are sick.

2. Internists
An internist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. Internists typically work in hospitals or outpatient clinics, and they often serve as a primary care physician for adults.

The demand for internists has been rising in recent years due to several factors. First, the population is aging, and older adults tend to need more medical care than younger people. Additionally, the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease has been increasing, and internists are often the best equipped to manage these conditions. Finally, the Affordable Care Act has led to an increase in the number of people with health insurance, which means more people are able to afford to see a doctor.

3. Emergency Doctors
Emergency physicians are doctors who specialize in emergency medicine. This means that they are trained to handle a wide range of medical emergencies, from car accidents and heart attacks to strokes and childbirth. Emergency physicians typically work in hospital emergency rooms, but they may also work in other settings such as urgent care clinics or trauma centers.

Due to the wide range of knowledge needed to become an emergency doctor, this profession tends to be less popular than specialized fields. This has led to a shortage of emergency doctors in recent years.

4. Psychiatrists
Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. These conditions can include anything from anxiety and depression to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Psychiatrists often work in hospitals or outpatient clinics, but they may also work in private practice.

With more psychiatrists reaching retirement age in the coming years, the number of needed replacements is expected to rise. Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health conditions is gradually dissipating, which has led to more people seeking treatment for these conditions. As a result, there is an increasing demand for psychiatrists.

5. OB/GYNs
OB/GYNs are physicians who specialize in the care of reproductive health for women and individuals assigned female at birth. This includes conditions such as pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. OB/GYNs often work in hospitals or outpatient clinics, but they may also work in private practice.

Categorized as surgical specialists, OB/GYNs are predicted to become increasingly in demand in the coming years.

6. Neurologists
Neurologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system disorders. These disorders can include anything from headaches and migraines to Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Neurologists often provide consultation services. There is a wide variety of possible nervous system disorders, making the specialty quite challenging to master.

7. Radiologists
Radiologists are physicians who specialize in the use of imaging to diagnose and treat medical conditions. This can include X-rays, MRIs, PET scans, and CT scans. As this is quite a specialized field, radiologists are in short supply.

With the ever-growing advancement of technology, radiologists are expected to become even more in demand in order to keep up with new developments.

8. Anesthesiologists
Anesthesiologists are doctors who specialize in the administration of anesthesia. This can include general anesthesia, which renders a patient unconscious, as well as regional anesthesia, which numbs a specific area of the body. Anesthesiologists often work in hospitals or outpatient surgical centers, where the procedures performed often require the use of anesthesia.

The demand for anesthesiologists is expected to grow in the coming years as the population ages and more people require surgical procedures to retain their quality of life.

9. Pediatricians
Pediatricians specialize in the care of children and adolescents, often going up to age 18 or even 21. This includes everything from routine check-ups to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions. Pediatricians can serve as a primary care doctor, or they may specialize in certain fields under the umbrella of children's health.

10. Cardiologists
Cardiologists are doctors that focus on the treatment, diagnosis, and management of cardiovascular conditions like heart disease and hypertension. This is considered a medical specialty, and cardiologists can choose to subspecialize in specific areas, such as interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, or advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
