•    Electronic Residency Application Service®(ERAS)
•    National Residency Matching Program®(NRMP)
•    San Fransisco Match for Ophthalmology or Plastic Surgery (SFMatch)
•    Urology Match – Specific for Urology Applicants

Steps to Complete Residency Applications

Complete the Required Examinations

Before you begin the registration process, confirm that you are eligible. Eligibility generally requires graduation from an accredited medical school and passing the required exams, such as USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK. These exams should be successfully passed before June of the Application year. International medical graduates may have additional requirements, such as ECFMG certification.

Gather Required Documents

Before submitting your application, gather all the required documents. These typically include your medical school transcript, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and your USMLE scores. Organize these documents and make sure that they're up to date and reflect your qualifications accurately.

Prepare for Interviews

After submitting your application, residency programs will review it and may invite you for interviews. Prepare for these interviews by researching the programs, practicing common interview questions, and reflecting on your career goals. Interviews are a critical part of the match process, allowing both you and the programs to assess fit and compatibility.

Rank Your Preferred Programs

If you are applying to the NRMP, following your interviews, you will rank the residency programs in order of preference through the NRMP portal. Consider factors such as program location, specialty, training opportunities, and personal preferences. The programs will also rank applicants. The NRMP then uses an algorithm to match students with programs based on these rankings.

Plan for Residency

Once you have matched, begin planning for your residency. This includes finalizing your graduation requirements, securing housing, and preparing for the transition to residency. Contact your matched program to receive information about orientation, start dates, and any other requirements.

Conclusion

Registering for the various matching programs is a multi-step process that requires careful planning and attention to detail. By understanding the steps involved and preparing thoroughly, you can navigate this process successfully and secure a residency position that aligns with your career goals.
