Intensive care medicine also referred to as critical care medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the care of seriously or critically ill patients who have, are at risk of, or are recovering from life-threatening conditions. An intensivist, or critical care doctor, specializes in providing care for critically ill patients, most often in the intensive care unit.

Neurocritical care medicine, on the other hand, is a specialized field that concentrates on the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases of the nervous system. This may include brain and spinal cord trauma, cerebral edema, ruptured aneurysms, severe strokes, encephalitis and meningitis, refractory seizures, and complicated brain tumors. As a neurocritical care physician, Dr. Burdick is equipped to diagnose and treat patients with neurological disorders or traumatic brain injuries, providing expert care to his patients in their most critical moments.
