"My first two years in Guadalajara were incredible! We learned real medicine, a new culture, new language and how to be independent and passionate about what we were studying: medicine,” said Marie Morales Ostermann, a newly graduate from the International Program of Medicine at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara (UAG). She came from Puerto Rico to study medicine and earned the highest grade point average of this generation, a 9.7.

The new doctor expressed a message on behalf of her colleagues during the event of graduation, which was held at Gimnasio Universitario on the main campus of the school, where she mentioned that this was one of the greatest adventures of her life and that the UAG contributed to making it possible.

"In my first two years of medicine, I learned how to treat patients; to distinguish between basic science and clinical science and how to use this knowledge to treat them. Once I learned to make a medical diagnosis after much study, mistakes, and practice, the professors and teachers gave me an incredible recognition because I learned it well." she said and then added "I would have never managed to get this far if I had not been accepted into the UAG program. Thanks UAG for giving me the opportunity of becoming a real doctor. This is a medical school who knows how to distinguish and choose between passionate students and not accept you only to boost their numbers, but to become real doctors who are passionate about their profession.”

Medical Vocation

Morales Ostermann is part of a large group of young women and men who traveled from the United States and Puerto Rico to study at UAG. They make part of the already 15 thousand graduates of the International Medical Program of this educational institution; that today serve their community and country with values and integral education.

In this event, there was also a message on behalf of the guest speaker of this generation, who in turn graduated from the UAG, Dr. Hector del Castillo Jr. Dr. Del Castillo went on to say that when arriving at Guadalajara in the summer of 1972 he did not expect to find a University so serious, well-founded, demanding, realistic and with a competitive system that helped form him into a qualified physician.

"I was idealistic, competitive, adventurous and daring; I came with my spouse, at the age of 22, and she helped me face the future. I was young and felt that I could achieve anything if they gave me the opportunity. Here I did it", he said.

The graduate of UAG, after telling anecdotes of his life, urged graduates to live and lead the profession of medicine forward in a noble way and for the benefit of society.

Following the guest speaker was the awarding of diplomas to the graduates and the Hippocratic Oath which was recited aloud in front of parents, friends, teachers, and directors of the institution.
