The emergency room of the Gogo Pediatric Institute in Ponce will reopen in February 2024, following the signing of an agreement with the company Carolina Lab Corp. to manage the facility.

Ulises Clavell Fontánez, Executive Director of the Gogo Foundation, announced today that the contract will be in effect for 15 years and includes an annual investment of $1 million by the managing company.

The emergency room will provide care for people of all ages and, in its initial phase, will include radiology services. Later on, they will open a clinical laboratory that will serve the general public, in addition to handling medical orders for patients in the emergency room.

This partnership will bring an end to a three-year period during which the service was unavailable, partly due to the forced relocation of the Gogo Pediatric Institute after the Damas Foundation purchased its previous location in the Reparada Industrial Zone.
"Ponce has the most important pediatric healthcare institution in the entire region," emphasized Clavell Fontánez.

"The only place I can confidently say has as many specialists as Gogo is the Medical Center (in Río Piedras) or the one in Bayamón (Puerto Rico Women and Children's Hospital). And we need to take pride in that," he added.
"After three years of being inoperative... today, we are signing the agreement so that in February, Ponce and neighboring towns can once again have the most spectacular emergency room in the entire region," stated Clavell Fontánez at a press conference.
The executive explained that the Gogo Foundation focused its efforts on preparing its new building on Hostos Avenue to resume clinics with specialists and subspecialists, which now number around twenty. As a result, the emergency room was put on hold.

However, he expressed confidence that "...this is the right time and the right people..." to steer the project, positioning the Gogo Pediatric Institute as the largest pediatric healthcare center in the southern and western parts of the country.

Héctor Pérez and Ulises Clavell Fontánez, both from the Gogo Foundation, made the announcement today alongside Dr. Gregorio Cortés Maisonet and attorney José Martinó from Carolina Lab.

On the other hand, the President of Carolina Lab,
Gregorio Cortés Maisonet, mentioned that his staff will prioritize providing continuity of care to patients, as the institute's specialists will be available to address emergency consultations.

"We will have direct communication with the specialists and subspecialists here. And that's very important because many times we go to an emergency room where there are not always specialists and subspecialists to handle the cases of the arriving patients, but in this case, we have them," stated the physician from Ponce.

Regarding the operating hours, Cortés Maisonet said, "It will initially operate on a reduced schedule as we build up the patient volume, but the expectation is for it to be open 24 hours."

The phased opening also includes adding a pharmacy service. The projection is that the emergency room will create nine to twelve direct jobs and twenty to twenty-four indirect jobs.

Furthermore, Cortés Maisonet committed to expanding services outside the institute to have closer contact with the southern population.
"We want to reach the community. Eventually, we will plan health fairs and other activities so that it is not seen as the patient having to come here, but rather that we commit to going to the community," he expressed.

Carolina Lab is a conglomerate of companies located in the metropolitan area of San Juan, offering health, laboratory, and pharmacy services, as well as conducting clinical studies.

Currently, the Gogo Pediatric Institute has specialist doctors in gastroenterology, physiatry, rheumatology, orthopedics, hematology and oncology, nephrology, psychology, psychiatry, neurology, cardiology, otolaryngology, genetics, allergies, family medicine, and internal medicine, among others.

They will also soon open a vision clinic and a dental clinic.

In addition, there is the Blood Bank;
Vimar Therapy Group, which provides physical, occupational, and speech therapies; and Mente Activa, a program for individuals diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's disease.
